The Building Sector Grows as Plans for the Largest Housing Scheme in the North East are Approved   Leave a comment

Planning permission has been granted to the biggest North East housing redevelopment on the banks of the Tyne which will create hundreds of jobs in the building construction industry.

The project is part of the government’s scheme to build 16, 000 new homes across England to deal with the current shortage of affordable houses as well as to help first time buyers with lower interest rates.

The government has recently argued that making homes more affordable for first time buyers will increase demand in the housing market and will help the building industry to generate more revenue.

The North East housing redevelopment will bring more jobs to the region as more than 1,800 homes will be built over the next 15 years in the Scotswood area of Newcastle.

Key developers and house builders involved in the project include Barratt, Keepmoat and Yuill; they expect to start building work on the first 400 homes this summer.   The housing development will comply with Level 4 of the government’s Code for Sustainable Homes, which is higher than the currently required standard.

The government has said it will support first time buyers in their efforts to get on the housing ladder easier which will increase housing demand and generate more money in the building construction sector.

First time buyers will get support and funding from the Homes and Communities Agency’s FirstBuy scheme, which is part of the Government’s wider proposals to boost growth by simultaneously stimulating demand, tackling supply-side barriers and supporting local building priorities.

The New Tyne West Development Company, the private-public partnership formed by the builders and the city council, will be running workshops in coming months to help local firms and builders to bid for work on the development.

Businesses and building companies interested in the bidding process can contact Amanda Senior on 0191 226 7943 or email Amanda.senior@ntwdc.co.uk for further information.

New ATL Training Centre Opens its Doors   Leave a comment

Local vocational training provider, ATL, has officially welcomed the first apprentices through the doors at its large new training centre in Guildford.

The new 8000 sq metre centre, located on Cathedral Hill Industrial Park in Deacon Field, will provide training for around 70 students each week, including young apprentices and adult learners. A number of local jobs have been created with its opening.

Twenty one purpose built work bays have already been constructed at the centre with a further 36 planned, offering students a practical environment in which to develop and learn key skills. Plans are also underway to introduce renewable energy technologies to the site to make it run energy efficiently.

ATL offers courses ranging from plumbing and gas to electrics and renewable energy qualifications.

Luke Ranger, ATL centre manager in Guildford, said: “We’re delighted to be up and running in our fantastic new centre in Deacon Field. The larger site means we can expand the number of students we can take on and our range of courses, as well as expanding our team with the addition of further staff.

“The new building has lots of potential, and offers us room to grow further in the future.”

He added: “We have been operating in this area for over six years and have built strong relationships with local employers over that time. Feedback on the new centre from students and employers alike has been really positive.”

Nick Hayward, managing director of ATL, said: “The new Guildford centre is a fantastic new site and really cements our position as the leading national vocational training provider in the UK. Its opening supports our ongoing plans for improvement.”

ATL operates a nationwide network of training centres and has more than 5000 students passing through its doors each year. For more details visit www.atl.co.uk

ATL, Apprenticeship Training Limited, Praises the Government’s ‘try before you buy’ Apprenticeship Scheme.   Leave a comment

Following the launch of a new government scheme, business owners across the UK will soon be able to take a leaf out of Lord Sugar’s book and ‘try before they buy’ to find their next apprentice, says local training provider ATL.

From August, the new Access to Apprenticeships scheme will come into place providing help and support for young people aged 16-24.

The scheme aims to provide young people with the opportunity to demonstrate to employers their commitment to work and study to a required standard.

Under the scheme, employers can take on a perspective apprentice for up to 12 weeks unpaid work experience over the period of six months. If they achieve the required standard during this period, then each apprentice will complete the remainder of their training as a paid employee for £100 per week. Upon qualification a payment will then be made back to the employer.

“It’s a great incentive for employers, as it’s really a win-win situation for them,” says Nick Hayward, CEO of leading vocational training provider, ATL. “An employer will be able to secure an extra pair of hands for a whole year for as little as £1500.”

Nick added: “For employers who want an apprentice but who are uncertain about finding someone suitable for their business, it gives them a chance to try them out. And in the case of ATL apprentices, who complete an intensive training programme before coming on the job, the young person will be an asset to the company from day one.”

ATL operates a nationwide network of training centre and has more than 5000 students passing through its door each year.

Access to Apprenticeships will provide up to 10,000 places in the first year, with a similar amount expected to be created in following years.

Apprentices More Appealing to Business Than Graduates   Leave a comment

It has come as no surprise to us that a survey of 500 companies by City & Guilds has revealed that out of those who hire apprentices, 52% of them believe that they are worth more to their businesses than University graduates.

We know that apprenticeships serve a vital economic purpose for industry and the number of apprenticeships being undertaken has risen 17%. This is expected to increase even further with University fees rocketing up to £9,000 a year from 2012, according to the Office for National Statistics. FULL STORY HERE
